Sickness
Y.O.U. is committed to the health and safety of all work experience participants, staff and worksites.
Youth participants that are sick are required to stay home.
If a supervisor/manager/Y.O.U. staff member suspects a participant is sick, they will be sent home immediately.
Worksites may clean work areas and high touch surfaces frequently throughout the day to minimize the potential spread of germs.
Participants should notify their job coach immediately if they are concerned about their health and safety at the worksite.
Safety & Accidents on the Job
If you have an on-the-job accident, injury, or illness, report it to the Worksite Supervisor right away.
The participant and Job Coach will be asked to complete and submit the applicable incident report form concerning the nature and cause of the accident. The timely reporting of accidents is essential for the health and well‑being of all participants as well as accurate recordkeeping. Participant will seek medical treatment if needed.
The Job Coach will notify your emergency contact whose name and phone number appear on your application. The Job Coach will also call Y.O.U. and inform the HR Department.
Safety at Your Worksite
There are many things that one can do to reduce the risk of being injured:
Follow all the rules of the worksite. Those rules are there for a reason.
Be aware of any potential hazards at the worksite. It is easier to avoid danger if you know it is there.
Alert your Worksite Supervisor to any hazards. He/she/they may be able to remove the hazards or at least make them safer.
Participants are not allowed to use any heavy equipment or power tools.
Do not talk or text on a cell phone while working, especially if you are using any kind of tools/machines/kitchen equipment. The distraction could result in an injury.
Avoid dangly jewelry, clothing, hair when using tools/machines/kitchen equipment.
Wear closed-toe shoes at all times.
SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Practice caution while going to and from your workplace. Please remember these safety tips:
Make sure that you have a safe way to and from work.
Do not walk alone, especially after dark. Walk with a buddy to and from work or to and from the bus.
Use well-lit, public walkways.
Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid risk. Don’t wear headphones when walking alone. If you suspect you are being followed: run in a different direction, go to the other side of the street and yell for help, or move quickly to a lighted area or a group of people.
When traveling to and from work, tell people where you are, where you are going, and when you expect to arrive.
If you see something, say something. Notify your Job Coach right away if you feel unsafe at your worksite or traveling to or from worksite. Call the police immediately if you notice suspicious activity or a crime being committed.
If you have questions or s or concerns, please speak with your Job Coach or call the Y.O.U. Summer hotline at 216.776.3900
Safety in the Community
Reporting Harassment, Bullying or Retaliation
Protection Against Retaliation
Y.O.U. expressly prohibits retaliation of any kind against any participant bringing a complaint or assisting in the investigation of a complaint. Such employees may not be adversely affected in any manner related to their employment. Y.O.U. cannot promise confidentiality for employees who make retaliation complaints. However, identities will be revealed only on a need-to-know basis. The process will be fair for both the person making an allegation and the individual who is being accused.
Y.O.U. encourages reporting of all perceived incidents of discrimination, bullying, retaliation or harassment. It is our policy to promptly and thoroughly investigate such reports. Y.O.U. prohibits retaliation against any individual who reports discrimination or harassment or who participates in an investigation of such reports.
Participants who believe that they have been the victim of such conduct should immediately discuss their concerns with their Job Coach or Worksite Supervisor.
The participant will be expected to provide a detailed account of the incident, witnesses (if any), dates, and other information considered relevant. A prompt and thorough investigation will be conducted. The investigation will be completed, and a determination made and communicated to the participant as soon as practical. Y.O.U. expects full cooperation with any investigation conducted.
If Y.O.U. determines that this policy has been violated, remedial action will be taken, commensurate with the severity of the offense. Appropriate action also will be taken to deter any future harassment, bullying, retaliation, or discrimination. If a complaint is substantiated, appropriate action, up to and including termination, will be taken.
Minor Labor Laws
These laws are set by the State of Ohio in order to provide protection for youth in the workforce. Y.O.U. upholds these laws to the highest standard and expects all worksites to be compliant in upholding them as well.
If your worksite is NOT compliant with these laws, please alert your Job Coach and Resource & Support Specialist immediately.
